Judith Alexander - Ceramicist
My work mainly concentrates on the subject of the dog. Dogs have always been a fascination of mine since early childhood.
I work with a variety of clay bodies, including paperclay. My work is hand built; I wrap wet slabs around paper to form the main body of my work. I find inspiration from contact I have had with my own dog and through friend’s dogs, I like my work to reflect the variety of personalities within these animals and also explore some of relationships many of us share with dogs.
I only fire my work to earthenware temperatures and like to use simple glaze effects. Oxide washes work extremely well; I particularly enjoy the fact that all the hand marks and creases within the pieces are exposed.
I have incorporated text within my work on occasions also and have experimented with layering slips and scratching back the surface to incorporate texts and pictures in to my work.
